ABOUT GOUVIA CORFU

Gouvia location:
On the E coast of Corfu, opposite the Greek mainland. 16 km NW of Corfu Town and the airport. Position: At the centre of an almost completely enclosed, natural bay. Olive and citrus groves and lush hillsides lie to the West.
General Description:
At around 3.5km long and 1km wide, Gouvia has become one of the most popular tourist destinations on the island, offering both lively nightlife and quiet hillside spots. However, the centre of Gouvia itself has a rather cramped feel and there is a one-way system in operation along the main strip. Gouvia resort has a definite nautical ambience: it boasts a large yacht marina and was once an historic Venetian naval base ? at one end of the beach you will find a ruined Venetian arsenal and the precariously beached wreck of a yacht. Adjoining Gouvia is the quiet village of Kontokali while 2km inland is Danila, a purpose-built, Greek-style village where folklore performances are organised for evening trips
Market/Suitability:
Middlemarket, without extremes of either nightlife or isolation. Currently favoured by German visitors
Gouvia Accommodation:

A range of hotels with a few in each category. Some self-catering units towards the Kontokali end of town.
Beaches in Gouvia:
Narrow sand and shingle beaches in several small, shallow coves, no more than 150 yds from the town centre; they can become crowded and mud can sometimes be a problem. Gouvia beach facilities include sunbeds and sun umbrellas, showers and toilets
Shopping:
Limited, although tourist shops sell local honey, ouzo, olive-wood trinkets and beach wear. Large discount store on main road. Corfu Town is the place to go for more serious shopping
Entertainments:
Daytime: beach and water-based activities including paragliding, diving and a variety of other water sports; boat trips; horse riding; exploring local countryside.
Nightlife: lively tavernas, cocktail and sports bars; discos, mainly along the main road
Eating out in Gouvia:
Good-value snack bars, Greek tavernas serving traditional fare, pasta restaurants and pizzerias, even Chinese and Tex-Mex options. British cuisine is widely available.
Public transport:
Regular buses ply the Corfu Town to Dassia route. A long-distance service operates between Corfu Town and the northern resorts
Gouvia local excursions:
Variety of excursions including Greek village trip; boat trips to Paxos, mainland Greece and Albania; and mountain bike trips to Paleokastritsa and Corfoit countryside. Also see Corfu Town
